Understanding the 3 IGCSE Music Components
Component 1: Listening Paper (Paper 1)
Weighting: 40% of final grade
Format: Written Listening Exam (~1 hour 15 minutes)
What is assessed: Students listen to a range of unseen audio extracts as well as prescribed set works, answering questions on musical elements, structural analysis, and stylistic features.
7 Areas of Study:
1 - Baroque Music: Identification of baroque genres, forms, and instruments, with a focus on Concerti, suites, and trio sonatas.
2 - Classical Music: Identification of Classical genres, forms, and instruments, with a focus on chamber music, symphonies and concerti
3 - Romantic Music: Identification of Romantic genres, expanded forms and new instruments of the era, with a focus on single-movement works for the orchestra.
4 - Music and Words: Art song for solo voice, music for choirs, popular songs and songs from musicals
5 - Music for Dance: Latin-american dance like Tango and Salsa, as well as EDM.
6 - Music for Small Ensemble: Chinese Silk and Bamboo ensembles (sizhu), Arabic Takht, and Hindustani classical music
7 - Music for Stage and Screen: Ballet music, Film music, and Video game music.
Component 2: Performing (Coursework)
Weighting: 30% of final grade
Format: Internal Assessment / External Moderation
What is assessed: Candidates submit two recorded performances (solo and ensemble) demonstrating technical mastery, musical expression, and ensemble awareness.
Key Requirements:
Solo Performance: One piece performed individually on the student's primary instrument or voice.
Ensemble Performance: One piece performed as part of a group (duet, trio, or larger ensemble) where the candidate plays an active, independent part.
Focus on pitch accuracy, rhythmic stability, tone quality, dynamic control, and stylistic interpretation.
Component 3: Composing (Coursework)
Weighting: 30% of final grade
Format: Internal Assessment / External Moderation
What is assessed: Candidates submit two original compositions in contrasting styles, accompanied by written scores or commentaries and audio recordings.
Key Requirements:
Composition 1: Must be written in a defined Western style/tradition, submitted with full staff notation.
Composition 2: Written according to a brief related to an Area of Study, submitted with an appropriate score or written commentary.
Demonstrates melody-writing, harmonic progression, structural coherence, effective instrumentation, and creative development of ideas.
